First Reflections on Our Fortieth
"Strike up a Song to Cornell" includes the
line "Fill the glasses with a song and drink the music's magic
spell." This is what I was able to do as part of my reunion weekend,
and it was nothing short of thrilling. Singing w/ the Glee Club and
Alumni choruses at Sage Chapel, and then, again, at Newman Arena, was
truly magical. The quality of the sound around me and the inspiration
provided by Musical Director, Scott Tucker to do my best to add to that
quality, combined with the positive and thunderous applause of the big
audiences was a true high on many levels, and boldly reminded me what
the richness of Cornell was all about.
Cornell with one voice. Wonderful

...A Personal Reflection
from '66 Classmate, Art Purcell
So
we came in rain.
Then woke to morning sun!
And
then, we had cold.
And just when we thought the coffee would never be hot enough, and exactly
in time to the final strains of the Alma Mater's "hail, all hail
,"
we suddenly had Beebe in bright yellow SUNSHINE!
Indeed, indeed, it was Ithaca!
We were back; and it was, once again, home.
We weathered it all with our Sixty-Six Smiles.
We had TWO Presidents share breakfast with us, and engage us in the
future of our University.
We delved into politics at Forum '66; peeked into and explored the many
Hidden Jewels of Cornell. We savored wine at "Wine Discovery Camp."
We returned to the Straight.
We enjoyed our Class Dinner in the glass-walled atrium of the spectacular
new Duffield Hall: a glorious Ithaca sunset reminding us why our campus
and its quads, even with its ornery weather, remains the gift to us
that it was.
But, most of all, we had TIME.
Clusters of us clustering, bunches of us walking -- here and there,
to and from the many events that filled the weekend.
We filled our cups with Purity Ice Cream, as we shared conversation
late into the night at our Becker HQ.
The Chimes rang; the Sherwoods sang, and music, Jazz to Jukebox, filled
the air.
But it was our laughter and our footsteps that resounded.
Our Hats and our (soon coveted) Buttons were everywhere (with their
phrases from the 60s bewildering and enticing Alumni of all ages - asking
us to translate our Sixties Slang and Codes). Trading buttons! ("Pig
Book" and "Near Near" proving the most highly sought!)

We filled the campus with our numbers!
All sorts of successes and celebrations!
ATTENDEES!
200 Classmates (10% more than our early goal!) and 327 Attending in
all.
122 members of Team '66, more than ever before, working throughout the
Year to lure us back.
47% of the Class participating in one way or another throughout our
40th Reunion Year!
CAMPAIGN!
556 Donors (meeting and surpassing our 550 goal), thus securing the
marvelous $100,000 Challenge for Participation (gifts at any level,
small or large) for Becker House.
67 Tower Club Members (surpassing our 66 goal)! - then learning that
the equally spectacular $100,000 Tower Club Challenge had also been
earned.
Our 40th Class Gift originally hoped to raise $35,000 as a '66 Becker
House Dean's Fund for Programming. Classmates -- all of us, together
-- in gifts of any and every amount, more than DOUBLED that goal. With
the Challenges now also earned, our 40th Class Gift to Becker House
thrillingly totals:
$271,862!
Our gift of more than a quarter of a million dollars directly relieves
University funding and will enrich the programs of Cornell students
who choose to live in the Becker Residential House for generations to
come.
OUR TOTAL CAMPAIGN GIFT TO CORNELL:
$2,784,803.42!
WE BEGAN OUR 40th REUNION YEAR WITH TWO GOALS:
To Share Time Together - and To Make a Difference.
WE DID BOTH.
From Attendees to Participation to Team '66 to Gifts:
It adds up to Cornell Celebrations of joy!
OH! AND
ANOTHER GREAT NUMBER:
5!
Our GREAT CLASS CLERKS:
Marie-Jouvelle Aubourg, Sue Dauber, Tim Dressel, Betsy Harding, and
Carmen Lam, who, with their smiles, and with their strong backs, and
with their Cornell spirit, made our 40th Reunion Weekend truly "happen!"
We have promised to join THEM at THEIR reunions in the years to come.
BUT THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER MOST?
4.
The years ('62-'66) shared on the Hill.
40.
The years since
which have proved that we continue to share
so much.
Friendships still cherished, wonderful new ones added now to the old.
We are Cornellians, and we are proudly the Class of 1966.
