Dear '66 Classmates (Friends):
Who knew? Well, in truth, we have always known it. But
who could ask for better news about our alma mater or for better publicity
and buzz than Cornell has received this fall? The new Cornell year began
with Newsweek's proclaiming us the Hottest Ivy, touting our emphasis
on problem-solving and scholarly debate, highlighted by a photograph
of the elegant A. D. White Library. The spirit of Cornell students meshing
with the background of academic commitment was captured in the wonderful
photo.
How do you add to that?
News of Cornellians being named "Hot Scholars".
News that Cornell is among the top one hundred "Best
Companies
to Work For," as noted in Working Mother magazine.
News that "Cornell Is. ..," a beautiful book
of photographs with
DVD, that launched the Capital Campaign, received
"Best of Show"
award, for its celebration of Cornell and for stating
the case
for the campaign.
But always, it is the students who state Cornell's case best. Cornell
is "Hot," because THEY are hot. They are engaged and on the
move, negotiating and exploring the nooks, crannies, niches, and paths
that sit on that Hill. Every year they create new ways to be Cornellians
and in so doing, they recreate Cornell. In endless ways, they fulfill
Ezra's founding mission: adapting, questioning, and inventing the new.
Okay, so you ask: "Hot??? It was FREEZING! Remember the gloves,
hats, mittens, snow, and ice of the mid-'60s?"
Yeah, well, sure, of course. And the clinic when we got the flu. (But
that was all just Ezra testing our mettle.)
Celebrate Cornell and '66-together-as we round the bend to 2008. Old
morphs ever into New far above those Cayuga's Waters. Making December
in Ithaca: indeed ever HOT.
Have Joy!
